Leadership When Everything is in Flux

WK 1 & 2  |  Scott Lumsden  |  Wright Hall

There's one constant about leading change: resistance. It's important to be prepared for the inevitable pushback against change. Knowing the basics about how systems work and how to deal with conflict is essential for a well equipped leadership team.

A Way Forward: An Identity, An Idea, & A Goal

WK 1 & 2  |  Scott Lumsden  |  Wright Hall

So you're convinced that things need to change, but are unsure about how to start a change effort? One thing is for sure: don't form a Change Committee! Instead, work with the session toward articulating the identity of the church, get some consensus about something that needs to change, then set a goal that embodies that change. This is the change process in a nutshell.

Leading Change

WK 1  |  Scott Lumsden  |  Wright Hall

Leading change takes courage, perseverance, and a dedicated team of folks willing to risk a few things for the sake of a better future. This is easier said than done, especially when most of the emotional energy of the church is geared toward maintenance of the status quo. Uh oh! Now what?!

Emotional Intelligence

WK 1  |  Heidi Husted Armstrong  |  Wright Hall

A relative newcomer influencing the field of leadership, Emotional Intelligence (and the brain science behind it) is considered to be more determinative of human success than IQ.  The “World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report” claims Emotional Intelligence will be one of the top 10 job skills by 2020. So what is EI, why the premium on it, and how can pastors – and congregations – improve?

Preaching & Community

WK 1 & 2  |  Heidi Husted Armstrong  |  Wright Hall

It kind of rattles you when an accomplished teacher of preaching confesses, “I don’t know how to preach anymore!” (David Lose) – but perhaps we all suspect preaching is changing, and is even in trouble.  So now what?  We’ll explore a preaching practice that focuses on learning to read scripture together in community, is less performance-based, and congregationally less passive and more participative – and even try it on for size.

My Story: Surprised by Change

WK 1  |  Heidi Husted Armstrong  |  Wright Hall

Surprised by change?  Holy cow – sometimes we never see it coming – and wonder if we’ll even survive!  And in some ways it’s only getting more challenging (“Today is the slowest pace of change we will ever see”).  Heidi’s story will help prime the pump as we begin to explore our own lived experiences of transitional ministry, and the possibilities for fruitful ministry there.

Moment of Transition: When the Scales Fall

WK 1 & 2  |  Scott Lumsden  |  Wright Hall

We all know that changes are needed in the church. Many of us see the change and talk about it, but how many of us are willing to lead it? Leading change in the church today is less about tweaking a budget or a program; it's more about a conversion to a whole new way of seeing the problem. It's a vulnerability to a process that cannot be controlled -- it's hope in an outcome that is in God's hands (not ours).
